2020 / Open Architecture competition / Proposal for a new wine tasting facility at the Portuguese vineyard Quinta do Monte d’Oiro in Freixial de Cima, Alenquer, north of Lisbon
Collaboration on concept, text and translation with Roger Bejinha.

From Sagres red earth and ceramics to the characteristic Portuguese wines runs a common thread of a a rich and traditional craftmanship where cultivation and modernization of what the earth provides takes place. Our proposal for a new wine tasting facility wants to connect, be rooted, to the earth and that tradition. Doing so by using a reinforced rammed earth technique, so called taipa, where the strata of the local earth will make the history and land visible in the architecture itself.

︎

The architecture follows a strict, simple, contemporary volume-based building typology not stranger to neither rural nor urban Portugal.

︎

Instead of an ellaborate form, it is the visible construction, with the layered earth, that gives the walls a vibrant expression where no part is the same as the other.
